The Sara Marie McFadden Foundation Inc. was established in loving memory of the late Sara Marie McFadden—a devoted mother, educator, mentor, and friend whose life was defined by service, compassion, and a deep commitment to education.
Sara Marie believed that education was one of the greatest gifts a person could receive and dedicated her life to empowering young people to reach their full potential. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, and later received a master’s degree in Special Education from Adelphi University.
She was a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, where she exemplified the organization’s ideals of scholarship, service, and sisterhood. Sara Marie was also a founding member of One Way Church of Christ, faithfully serving for many years as Superintendent of the Sunday School Department, where she inspired countless children and families through her teaching and leadership.
Today, the Sara Marie McFadden Foundation continues her legacy by investing in students, supporting educational opportunities, and removing financial barriers through scholarships and educational assistance. Through every life we touch, we strive to carry forward Sara Marie’s enduring belief that education has the power to transform individuals, families, and communities.
The Rising Cost of College Textbooks
Why Our Work Matters
The cost of higher education extends far beyond tuition. For many students, textbooks and required course materials remain one of the most significant—and often overlooked—financial barriers to academic success. While colleges have expanded the use of digital resources and open educational materials, the cost of books and supplies continues to place a heavy burden on students. Recent estimates show that colleges budget approximately $1,300 or more per year for books and supplies, depending on the institution and program of study. (College Board Research)
These expenses force many students to make difficult decisions. Some delay purchasing required materials, while others take fewer classes or work additional hours simply to afford the resources needed to succeed. No student should have to choose between paying essential living expenses and purchasing the books required for their education.
Since 2018, the Sara Marie McFadden Foundation Inc. has remained committed to helping alleviate this burden. Through our Book Scholarship and School Supplies Program, we have invested more than $10,000 in students pursuing higher education. Our mission is simple: to ensure that financial hardship does not stand in the way of academic excellence.
Every scholarship we award represents more than financial assistance—it is an investment in a student’s future. By helping provide textbooks, school supplies, and other educational resources, we empower students to focus on learning, achieving their goals, and building brighter futures for themselves and their communities.
As educational costs continue to challenge families across the country, the Sara Marie McFadden Foundation remains steadfast in its commitment to expanding access to higher education. We believe every student deserves the opportunity to succeed, regardless of financial circumstances, and we will continue working to remove barriers that stand between students and their dreams.
